Listed Species
of Montana
In order to receive protection under the
Endangered Species Act, a species, subspecies, or distinct
population segment must be placed on the Federal list of endangered and
threatened wildlife and plants. A species listed as "endangered" is one
that is in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of its
range. A species listed as "threatened" is one that is likely to become
endangered within the foreseeable future throughout all or a significant portion
of its range. A "proposed" species is one that is proposed in the Federal
Register to be listed under section 4 of the Endangered Species Act and a
"candidate" is a species for which FWS or NOAA Fisheries has on file sufficient
information on biological vulnerability and threats to support a proposal to
list as endangered or threatened.
