Draft Environmental Assessment for Statewide
Public Water Access Development for the State of Indiana

The Service, in cooperation with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR), is seeking comments from the public on a draft generic Environmental Assessment (EA) for the construction of public water access sites (boat launching ramps) in Indiana.  The draft generic EA evaluates two action alternatives, along with the "No Action" alternative as required under the National Environmental Policy Act.

Under the preferred alternative, the DNR would continue to use Federal Sport Fish Restoration Act funds to construct and renovate public water access sites throughout Indiana.  A site specific worksheet would be developed for each new access site under the generic EA.

Other alternatives being considered include a reduced level of public access development work by DNR without the use of federal funds, and an alternative with no new public construction/renovation work, relying instead on private efforts to meet the public's water access needs.

The draft EA is available below.  Print copies of the draft EA may also be obtained from Beth Hippensteel, Indiana DNR Division of Fish & Wildlife, Room W273, Indiana Government Center South, 402 West Washington St., Indianapolis, IN 46204; telephone (317) 234-3539; e-mail

Written comments on the plan may be submitted through July 11, 2005, to Beth Hippensteel at the mailing or e-mail address above.
