March 2017

The Midwest Region in March:
In like a lion and out like a lion

March is well underway and with it there is much to be excited about. Be it the fun of college sports tournament time, or the return of spring and the skies filling again with our feathered friends, we’re already roaring into this exciting month.

One of the things that I’m most excited about is the recent recognition of our wildlife inspectors and our law enforcement staff. Last week, Ducks Unlimited honored our deserving federal wildlife officers from across the Prairie Pothole Region for their ongoing efforts to protect America’s prairies by presenting our staff with the 2017 Ducks Unlimited Wetland Conservation Achievement Award. (Learn more) Also, our Wildlife Inspectors in Rosemont, Illinois, recently received the Department of the Interior Unit Award, presented by Assistant Director for the Office of Law Enforcement Bill Woody. (Learn more) Hats off to both groups for the superior work that you do. These are both well-deserved honors!

Now is when we can look to the skies and soon to our shores for the return of a variety of birds from their overwintering locations. Eagles are reappearing and nesting; and lakes are losing their ice, ready for countless shorebirds and waterfowl which will travel north along the Upper Mississippi Flyway.

Another March event I’m excited about is our upcoming Service Directorate meeting where we will discuss future budgeting and hear from our newly confirmed and sworn in Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke. I look forward to the chance to visit with him and tell him about your great work throughout the Midwest Region. I’m also looking forward to Employee Appreciation Day on April 27th and the awards to be presented. We received a record number of nominations –over 80– this year! Stay tuned as we come together to celebrate the winners for each category next month.

Finally, I’d like to give a shout out to the team organizing Pheasant Fest in the Twin Cities last month. It was so refreshing to hear that Pheasants Forever and their members are “all in” when it comes to working to preserve and restore important habitat for our pollinators. It was a wonderful event reflecting the importance of not only pheasants and quail, but also birds, bees and butterflies with one of our key conservation partners and many members of the public.

Be safe and enjoy this month’s issue of Inside Region 3.
