Rex Johnson receives partnership award

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources recently recognized Dr. Rex Johnson, Habitat and Population Evaluation Team with its prestigious “Partnership Award” during a coordination meeting between the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Migratory Bird Program staff.

Johnson was recognized for his outstanding contributions to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources over the past four years while he served on an Intergovernmental Personnel Act assignment with the agency. Dr. Dale Garner, Division Administrator for Iowa Department of Natural Resources, shared that “Rex was instrumental in working with the Iowa DNR to incorporate science-based, landscape-level planning into their decision making. He also served as a respected mentor to other scientists within the Iowa DNR Research Branch over the past four years.”

Johnson retired from the Service in May after 19 years of working with the agency. He started with the Service in 1998, working for the old North American Waterfowl and Wetlands Office in the Headquarters Office in Washington D.C. He eventually transitioned to be the leader of the Habitat and Population Evaluation Team office in Fergus Falls, Minnesota.

He finished out his career with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources through the Intergovernmental Personnel Act assignment. Although he is retiring from the Service, he is not retiring from his passion of conserving prairie-wetland habitat. He recently accepted a position as the Executive Director of the South Dakota Grasslands Coalition, an organization whose stated mission is “to improve stewardship of grasslands through sustainable and profitable management”.
