Our Bread and Butter: Field Season

Greetings to you all as we have now fully entered the flurry of activities we fondly call field season in our world of conserving and protecting our treasured resources in the region.

Recently I had the distinct honor and pleasure of participating in the Strategic Habitat Conservation Practitioners Forum at our National Conservation Training Center in Shepardstown, West Virginia. The gathering gave those attending from across the country the chance to reflect on our progress, share invaluable lessons learned, and to bring forward recommendations beyond our initial steps to identify surrogate species. I was pleased to see that our Region’s processes were highlighted as best practices that are being used elsewhere. A shout-out here to both Doug Helmers, Iowa Private Lands Coordinator, and Mark Brouder, Ashland Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office Project Leader, and to our entire SHC team for all of their outstanding work and leading the way. And while Deputy Director Jim Kurth was a welcome participant at the Forum, we also had the chance to welcome him to our region as he made a visit to our Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge, Ohio. His visit came in advance of the refuge’s International Migratory Bird Day activities at our world renowned home for warblers and birders alike. Birders from around the world converge for this annual event that is like no other. Read more.

June is National Pollinators Month and I’m happy to see -- and hear -- the arrival of our pollinators. You can track them too on the Journey North web site Read more about monarchs in particular and their journey. Read more.

June is also Safety Month and I will once again remind you all to never become complacent, at work or at home, to the risks that abound this time of year. At our jobs we all need to make sure we’re trained, outfitted and alert to make this another productive season. Each of you remains our top resource. Be safe out there!
