July 2016

Grand openings and individual honors
abound around the region

I hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful, patriotic and safe Fourth of July. While many of you took the time and gathered with family and friends, it’s nice that we can recognize the freedoms we have and can never take for granted, as well as the diversity our nation is founded on which makes us who we are.

It’s been a busy month of celebrations already and one I recently attended was the fulfillment of eight years of support and commitment resulting in the much anticipated grand opening of the Oak Savanna Learning Center at Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge, Minnesota. It was great to see our partners and young folks alike, who will all benefit from this wonderful new facility. Learn more

I’d also like to give a shout out to the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge Friends Group. They were named the National Wildlife Refuge Association’s Molly Krival Friends Group of the Year. I send them heartfelt congratulations and would like to point out the importance of Tamarac’s and our many other Friends Groups valuable contributions to our refuges all across the Midwest Region.

As National Wildlife Refuge Association President David Houghton presented the award to the Tamarac Friends Group he said: “The Friends of Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge was the driving force behind the refuge’s incredible Discovery Center that serves as the hub for the refuge environmental education program, citizen science training, and conservation planning. The refuge is so very lucky to have such a successful Friends Group helping make wildlife conservation an integrated thread in the fabric of the entire community.” Learn more

Another shout out goes to Kraig McPeek and his staff for a great job in organizing a fantastic pollinator event in Davenport, Iowa. The Quad Cities Pollinator Conference was a great forum and offered a call to action by citizens and groups, as we work with our partners to support increased monarch and pollinator conservation efforts here in the Midwest and across the country.  Learn more

Congratulations also go to Fabian Romero for his induction into the International Hunter Education Association Hall of Fame. It’s great to see Fabian selected for his efforts to support hunter education. This touches close to home for me, as I also received the Association’s honor as one of the first recognized while the program was in its infancy back in 1985. Well done, Fabian! Learn more

We’re deep into the summer portion of our field season with many new employees on board. I can’t stress enough how important it is to make sure all of us, new and veteran employees alike, keep up on any necessary training and in doing our jobs always keep safety first. I ask supervisors and managers to make sure all have had the appropriate safety training and for everyone to take those lessons learned and apply it to the job at hand.
