A New Year and new opportunities

Happy New Year to all and welcome back! I hope each of you enjoyed your holidays and are now recharged and ready to roar into 2018. If you haven’t seen it yet, take a look at our 2017 year in review video which we shared via email just before the holidays. It’s a great reflection of your conservation work that made 2017 such a success. Here’s to another great year!

Restoring habitat was a major focus last year and will continue to be so in the year ahead. This work remains so vitally important for migratory birds, endangered and threatened species and for a variety of pollinators and game species. Here are some examples of restoration as both an education tool Learn more and improving habitat for waterfowl Learn more.

This year as we continue to expand opportunities for hunting and fishing, we’ll also be working with our state and other partners to enhance the “recruitment, retention and reactivation” (R3) of sportswomen and men. Learn more Enjoying the outdoors, conserving our natural resources and sharing these great pastimes with those around us go hand in hand. Learn more about a recent project which expanded hunting and fishing opportunities in Wisconsin.

We enter this year with several challenges that we’ve seen and overcome before, including uncertain budgets and awaiting the nomination of our next Director. As those who have been through similar times will tell you, keep in good cheer and in good will. Our hard work toward achieving our mission continues despite these challenges.

Hats off (although not literally in these frigid temperatures) to all who continue to work through these colder than normal conditions. I truly appreciate all that you do and ask that you continue to work hard while always keeping safety in mind.

Lastly, I would like to again thank all of you who took the time to participate in the Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey. The Midwest Region again ranked at the top for participation and in other categories, which is rewarding to hear. Through surveys like this, however, we know that we can continue to make improvements. Stay tuned for more about this and actions we plan to take as a result of your valuable input in the days ahead.
