Key Events, Recognition
Take Flight In February

Greetings to you all as we enter into another busy month that also includes the rare opportunity of an extra day of success, as it’s a leap year.

I'm sure you've heard about the continuing events at Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon. I remind all of you that the best thing we can do to help our colleagues is to let law enforcement agencies continue to do their jobs. This remains a sensitive and rapidly changing situation. While this event may be many miles away, each project leader should review their station's safety protocols and make sure employees are familiar with them. The safety of our employees remains our highest priority.

Through this situation, I've seen our Service family’s professionalism shining through. I've also seen a willingness and desire from many to do whatever they can to help, reminding me what a compassionate team we are across the country.

Now that we’re beyond the latest deep freeze, hopefully the last of this season, we’re nearer the time when we witness firsthand the return of our migrating birds from their wintering grounds. This year is a special one in our work with migrating birds as we will be celebrating the Migratory Bird Treaty centennial. Learn more about the treaty and some activities you can take part in. I’d like to give a shout out to our Ecological Services staff in recognition of another significant milestone: the completion of the final 4(d) rule for the northern long-eared bat. So many of you contributed your outstanding work to our listing determination of the species as threatened and now to the final 4(d) rule, from our own regional staff, to staff from the other four regions within the bat’s range and in headquarters. Lastly, I recently joined Director Dan Ashe in St. Louis, where he received the 2015 St. Louis Zoo Conservation Award during a ceremony at the 24th annual Marlin Perkins Society Celebration. This award reflects on how well we work together with our partners to accomplish so many great things, and that our partners recognize and appreciate these efforts. Keep up the great work!
