St. Croix WMD Event Honors 2015 Paul Kroegel
Refuge Manager of the Year Tom Kerr

On July 25, local, regional and national guests flocked to the St. Croix Wetland Management District, Wisconsin, to honor Tom Kerr, the National Wildlife Refuge Association’s 2015 Manager of the Year.

The Paul Kroegel Refuge Manager of the Year award is one of the most prestigious honors for Refuge System staff, given to those who demonstrate leadership and bold vision emblematic of Kroegel’s lasting legacy as the System’s first refuge manager.

Kerr began his career in 1989 with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a Cooperative Student and Refuge Operations Specialist at Rice Lake National Wildlife Refuge in Minnesota. He became the Refuge Manager at St. Croix Wetland Management District in 2007, gaining the additional responsibility of managing Whittlesey Creek National Wildlife Refuge in 2008.

Kerr has worked closely with the Friends of the St. Croix Wetland Management District since the group’s establishment in 2010, one of the many partnerships he has spearheaded in the community.

“Tom Kerr has brought invaluable amounts of leadership and service to his position in refuges. His success and that of his staff are evident to us and now, quite fittingly, also recognized by a national audience,” said Tom Melius, Midwest Regional Director. “Congratulations for this well deserved recognition.”

Those attending included: Cynthia Martinez, Chief of the National Wildlife Refuge System; Tom Melius, Midwest Regional Director; Jared Brandwein, Director of Conservation Programs of the National Wildlife Refuge Association; and Charlie Blair, Midwest Region Refuge Chief; and Rick Schultz, former Midwest Region Refuge Chief and current Midwest National Wildlife Refuge Association representative.
