April 2017

The lands we manage are filling with the
return of plants, pollinators and birds

Spring has arrived and with it the enjoyment on my morning drive and seeing the pairings of ducks and geese in our wetlands and the red-winged blackbirds flaring their wings as they return to our marshes; graceful reminders of the work at hand as we enter the field season once again.

I’ve enjoyed checking out the Journey North website to follow the movement of butterflies, hummingbirds and more. Their migration updates are fun to track, especially this time of year.

I hope many of you took the opportunity to participate in safety awareness activities and trainings that were hosted at the regional office and many of our field offices last week. Safety comes first and foremost for all we do, every day, every month and every year. And with the arrival of seasonal interns and fellows soon, we all need to take a little time to make sure they are given proper safety guidance and gear, while not forgetting that we all can use refreshers on the safest way to get our jobs done. You remain our number one resource and I urge you to stay vigilant, stay trained, and stay safe. Learn more.

April also brings us Earth Day and I encourage you, not only on the 22nd but every day, to get out and appreciate the lands we work so hard to conserve and the many creatures that live and thrive there. These lands we serve as landlords of for the American public are there for us all to enjoy and to pause and feel the satisfaction of the results of our years of work.

As we continue the transition of our new administration, I am currently in Headquarters helping in the Director’s office for a brief stretch and I am looking forward to the opportunity this summer to host our Directorate for a meeting here in the Midwest.

Soon after I return from my stint in D.C., we will be celebrating you, our employees as part of Employee Appreciation Day on April 27th. I tip my hat to your great work! We had record numbers of award nominations, which comes as no surprise to me knowing the caliber of people we have in our region. I congratulate all nominees and look forward to announcing the winners of the various categories. Hope you can join us in person or via webcast for the ceremony.

When you can, check out this feature on our staff at Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge Learn more.

See you all soon. Enjoy this month’s Inside Region 3!
