Littleton Dam Project

Draft Environmental Assessment available for public review and comment for proposed Littleton Dam Removal and Rock Rapids Construction on the Wapsipinicon River, Iowa

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has released for public review the draft environmental assessment (EA) of the proposed dam removal and construction of a rock rapids on the Wapsipinicon River in Littleton, IA.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Iowa Department of Natural Resources are proposing to remove Littleton Dam and construct an upstream rock rapids consisting of six weir rows that span the width of the river and improve access to the river for anglers and other recreationists near the former dam. The proposed actions will reconnect 56.5 miles of the Wapsipinicon River, improve upstream fish migration and access to seasonal habitats, expand the distribution and diversity of mussels through the river reach, eliminate the public drowning hazard associated with the dam, maintain area fishing and improve navigation for paddlers.

The EA assesses the effects of three alternatives in detail. Alternatives considered include: (A) No Action: Leave dam in-place, (D) Dam Removal with construction of ½ height rock rapids and (E) Dam Removal with construction of full height rock rapids.

The Draft EA was prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act and is available under the Hot Topics tab at http://www.fws.gov/midwest/fisheries. The public may view and provide comments for a 30 day period.
