Original caption: Ernest J. Greenwalt, manager of the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge near Cache, Oklahoma is carrying the water hose ahead of the refuge fire-jeep while his son Lynn drives. The man beside the jeep is a volunteer. Fire broke out in the military reservation just outside the refuge and everyone turned out to put it under control. The jeep carries 120 gallons of water in tank and a length of hose, is equipped with a portable radio and successfully maneuvers on rough terrain where larger trucks have difficulty. October 1948. Note: Ernest Greenwalt's son Lynn would go on to become the Director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service from 1973-1981.
