Volunteers are vital to keep Julia Butler Hansen Refuge for the Columbian White-tailed Deer operating. Volunteers help with a variety of programs including tree planting, building bat boxes, and grounds maintenance.

Youth Conservation Corps

Julia Butler Hansen Refuge for the Columbian White-tailed Deer has a summer Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) Crew. We hire teens to work 40 hours/week from mid-June through mid-August to work, learn and earn together by doing projects that further develop and conserve the nation's resources. YCC crew members will earn minimum wage. Work projects include a variety of refuge activities, such as trail maintenance and construction, fencing, painting, invasive plant control, office and grounds maintenance, and other physical outdoor work activities.

To be eligible to apply for the Youth Conservation Corps, the following criteria must be met:

  • Be between the ages of 15-18 during the summer employment period.
  • Be able to provide your own transportation daily to the Refuge Headquarters Office.
  • Be willing to perform physical outdoor work activities.
  • Work the entire season (8 weeks).
