1903 - First Federal Bird Reservation

Pelican Island Exhibit

President Theodore Roosevelt established Pelican Island, FL, as the first Federal bird reservation, and as the first unit in what would become the National Wildlife Refuge System.

Recently, staff at the National Conservation Training Center found that the designation of Pelican Island was the result of a survey error!
