And it rained and rained

Hurricane Sandy pummeled several national wildlife refuges in the mid-Atlantic area with rain. During a 10-hour period on Oct. 30, rain guages measured 8 inches at both Prime Hook refuge in Del. and Chincoteague refuge in Va. Six inches poured down on Blackwater refuge in Md. Refuge employees will assess damages in the coming days.

Service braces for Hurricane Sandy

National wildlife refuges, national fish hatcheries, and other Service field stations from Virginia to Maine are prepared for heavy winds, rain, flooding, and erosion that will likely results from Hurricane Sandy. Field stations activated hurricane plans on Friday, securing boats, equipment and facilities, and in some cases moving staff to high ground. Service personnel are also coordinating with neighboring communities to offer assistance. Several offices are now closed to the public  until the storm passes and damage can be assessed.
