Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) hosted its annual Youth and Physically Challenged Deer Hunt during the weekend of Nov. 20 through Nov. 22, 2009.  Twenty-five youth as well as 27 physically challenged hunters participated in this year's hunt.

The weekend hunt provided many trials for the hunters.  Warm temperatures and downed trees from a spring storm combined to challenge the patience and skills of each of the hunters.  These hunters harvested 41 deer during the three-day hunt.

The hunt was coordinated and conducted by Crab Orchard NWR volunteers. This group of volunteers was responsible for scouting the hunting area prior to the hunt, building blinds, and assisting the hunters while they were in the field.
