Urban Biodiversity Week in Chicago

Region 3, May 16, 2013

The Chicago Illinois Field Office recently supported the first "Urban Biodiversity Week." The event was planned and sponsored by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources as a way to introduce local residents to the nature and diverse species that still occur in natural areas concentrated around the Illinois border with Indiana and in the southern part of the City of Chicago itself. This area is part of the Calumet Reserve, and is one of the two Illinois areas recognized in the Department of Interior's "America's Great Outdoors" initiative.

During one of several nature hikes, biologist Mike Redmer of the Service's Chicago Office led a group of interested participants in the field to identify the frogs and toads (and their tadpoles) of Hegewisch Marsh, on the far southern part of Chicago.
