Representatives from the Fish and Wildlife Service recently joined in a roundtable discussion with Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis. Solis was in New Mexico in part to honor the Association of General Contractors (ACG) for their apprenticeship and support programs for student career advancement. The “21st Century Registered Apprenticeship and Innovator” designation honors organizations for unique and exemplary programs, and partnerships and strategies which have a significant role in creating and training a diverse workforce. The Association of General Contractors was the driving force behind the creation of ACE Leadership High School which specializes in teaching architecture, construction, and engineering focused on a traditionally underserved minority student body. In 2012 Service personnel began partnering with ACE and EDI Architecture to develop a unique outdoor education center. The outdoor area will be used by the community and schools in order to share the importance of ecosystems and endangered species, as well as to connect youth with nature. As part of their classroom curriculum, students created a work plan for developing components of the outdoor education center while following the steps of a real world project. Students began with a conception stage, researching and developing kiosk and bridge ideas and models. Next they worked with Service engineers and local architects to design ADA compliant structures, and to develop materials and budget lists. Finally students put their skills to the test and successfully brought their ideas to life by building and installing their structures. All along, the students worked with Service biologists researching and presenting posters on the importance of protecting our endangered species.
