Coleman National Fish Hatchery
California and Nevada Region

Welcome to the Coleman National Fish Hatchery

Located in Northern California, the Coleman National Fish Hatchery  is located along Battle Creek, a tributary of the Sacramento River. We spawn and raise Chinook salmon and steelhead trout;  each year we produce over 14 million juvenile fish.

The hatchery is open to the public daily (including holidays), 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Although most hatchery lands and outdoor spaces have remained open for the public to enjoy, we ask that you recreate responsibly.

• Check the refuge or hatchery website and call ahead for current information. Operations vary based on local public health conditions.
• The CDC recommends all individuals wear a mask indoors in public in areas of substantial or high transmission. Recognizing that most of the United States is currently in substantial or high transmission categories and to best protect visitors and our staff, we’ve implemented a nationwide mask requirement. Masks are now required inside all U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service buildings, regardless of vaccination status or location. All people, regardless of vaccination status, are required to wear a mask on all forms of public transportation and in healthcare settings on DOI lands.
• Most importantly, stay home if you feel sick and continue to watch for symptoms of COVID-19 and follow CDC guidance on how to protect yourself and others.

Return of Salmon Festival

The 2021 Return of the Salmon Festival has been cancelled. Watch for it's "return" next year on October 15, 2022.

Primary Species

The primary species we produce are Chinook salmon and steelhead. After being released from the hatchery the fish migrate downstream in the Sacramento River to the Pacific Ocean and then, after 1-3 years, return to the hatchery to spawn.

The hatchery is open for self guided tours daily, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. find a map here. You will find a story walk located along the lawn area at the hatchery, the current book is "Pout Pout Fish and the Bully Bully Shark". We also have a virtual reality game available for play on the hatchery grounds.
