Longsolid, Fusconaia subrotunda

Download the Longsolid Species Status Assessment

The longsolid (Fusconaia subrotunda) is a freshwater mussel currently found in Alabama, Kentucky, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.

In 2010, the Service was petitioned to place the longsolid on the federal list of theatened and endangered species. It was one of 404 species petitioned at the time by a handful of organizations. After reviewing the petition, in 2011 we found the petition presented substantial information indicating that listing the longsolid may be warranted. That finding triggered a deeper examination of the data available for the longsolid, which, in the near future, will culminate in a decision of whether to propose listing the longsolid as an endangered or threatened species..

The Species Status Assessment (SSA) report is a synthesis of information about the longsolid from across its range, including the mussel's current condition and projections into the future. This assessment is intended to provide the best available scientific and commercial information to assist the Director's decision of whether to propose the longsolid for listing under the Endangered Species Act.
