Goodnews River Rainbow Trout Abundance

Ken Gates with a rainbow trout in Goodnews River. USFWS/Doug PalmerWild rainbow trout stocks in southwest Alaska are world famous and support a multimillion dollar recreational fishing industry. One of the most popular sport fisheries for rainbow trout in the region occurs on the Goodnews River. In addition to the sport fishery, rainbow trout are also harvested in local subsistence fisheries. Resource managers and local residents have expressed concerns that increased angling use and an unknown level of subsistence use may be impacting the structure of the rainbow trout population. To address these concerns, we are working cooperatively with the Togiak National Wildlife Refuge to estimate the abundance of rainbow trout in the North Fork of the Goodnews River using mark and recapture techniques. Field sampling was initiated during 2005 and will be continued during 2006.
