Hike Wapack Trail

An extensive network of trails, such as this one at Wapack National Wildlife Refuge in New Hampshire, draw hikers to refuges. On March 16, San Diego National Wildlife Refuge staff will lead a hike on that refuge’s McGinty Mountain Trail.

Florida Scrub-Jay Festival
Saturday, March 2 — Oscar Scherer State Park, Osprey, FL
The festival at Jonathan Dickinson State Park in southeast Florida celebrates the only bird species unique to the Sunshine State. Scrub-jays are found at Hobe Sound, Lake Wales Ridge and Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuges. Enjoy live music, guided nature walks, live animal displays, children’s crafts and environmental exhibits.


Eagle Tours
Saturday, March 2, 9 a.m. — Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge, OK
View the bald eagle cam at refuge headquarters and learn about the bald eagle. Then hop aboard the refuge tour bus to view three active nests.


Teaching Cranes to Fly
Sunday, March 3, 2 to 3 p.m. — St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge, FL
Meet Operation Migration pilot Brooke Pennypacker and hear about his experiences in teaching awkward chicks to fly and follow the ultra-light aircrafts on the migration route from Wisconsin to Florida.


Nature on Film
Thursday, March 7, 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. — Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, NJ
Is water a commercial good or a human right? Bring a “green” bag lunch for the viewing of Water on the Table. Beverages and dessert provided.


Swan Day Festival
Saturday, March 9, 10 am - 3 pm — Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, UT
Celebrate Tundra Swan Day with a dayful of free activities. Take an auto loop tour to view the return of these magnificent migratory birds. Enjoy swan-themed crafts, games, movies and more inside the cozy and warm Wildlife Education Center.


Eagle Festival  
Saturday, March 9, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. — Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, MD
The refuge’s 13th annual free festival features live raptor programs, kids’ activities, a photography workshop, a guided bird walk, exhibits and the popular eagle prowls. 


Snowshoes and Snowy Owls
Saturday, March 9, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — Sullys Hill National Game Preserve, ND
Join a guided snowshoe hike or explore the trails on your own. Warm up inside with a nature movie: “The Magic of Snowy Owls.” Make a snowy owl craft.


Scenic Refuge Tour
Sunday, March 10, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. — Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, VA
Join staff for a scenic ride through the refuge and False Cape State Park while observing winter waterfowl and other native wildlife. Tours include a one mile, round-trip hike to the Wash Woods cemetery. Don’t forget your binoculars. Reservations: 757-301-7329 ext. 152.


Happy Birthday, National Wildlife Refuge System!

Many national wildlife refuges will host special events in honor of the Refuge System’s 110th birthday. More info here.


Hike with a Ranger
Saturday March 16, 9 a.m. to noon — San Diego National Wildlife Refuge, CA
Enjoy a strenuous hike on the McGinty Mountain trail. Children will have a treasure hunt to keep them entertained while hiking. Meet: McGinty Mountain trailhead. RSVP: Lisa, 619- 476-9150, ext. 106.
