A botanist was once served a sprig of Michigan monkey-flower as a garnish on a restaurant dinner plate, leading to the discovery of a new population of this species!
Michigan Monkey-flower (Erythranthe michiganensis)
The Michigan monkey-flower is a rare Michigan endemic plant with a range restricted to Great Lakes shorelines in the Mackinac Straits and Grand Traverse regions. It is semi-aquatic and forms mats over mucky soil and sand saturated or covered by cold, flowing spring water. Habitat for the Michigan monkey-flower habitat has been lost to recreational and residential development, which led to declines and listing this plant as endangered under the federal Endangered Species Act.
