The week's celebration started October 14th with the Big Sit. Hearing a Virginia rail, marsh wren, and great-horned owl brightened the dark, cold morning. Led by 6 volunteers, 25 visitors observed more than 66 bird species throughout the day. Friends of Great Swamp NWR hosted six sunset walks and one afternoon walk October 14 - 20, including a photographers walk.

Over the course of the week, 93 visitors and 22 Friends and volunteers participated. The refuge also celebrated the 50th anniversary of its designated Wilderness. Refuge staff gave a presentation on the Wilderness Act and Wilderness designation on the refuge. To conclude National Wildlife Refuge Week, a dozen volunteers weeded and cleared the Nature Detective Trail at the Refuge’s Visitor Center and then spread a layer of wood chips, much needed maintenance on this popular trail.
