Imagine the sounds of a child’s laughter and the excited squeals as your child hooks their first fish and reels it in. Over 300 kids, along with their families celebrated National Fishing and Boating Week the first week of June at the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery. Parents, grandparents, and kids, all connected for the eighth annual Kid’s Fishing Day and it was a wonderful success.

The fun began with three learning stations (Boating Safety, Knot Tying, and “Fishing 101”). Each station was required and the kids got their “passports” stamped before moving on. After that, it was time for “the main event” where the kids were able to try out their new skills and catch a beautiful rainbow trout. Volunteers helped even cleaning and bagging the fish for the families, all ready to be taken home for dinner.

At the end of the day, the smiles were still endless and some new fish stories were already in the making. From the looks of things, there will be many fine fishermen in the future judging by the amount of trout that were caught.

Many thanks to those who helped make this day possible including the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, GoPAW, Icicle Chapter of Trout Unlimited, Wenatchee Sportsmen’s Association, Friends of Northwest Hatcheries, Central Washington Bass Club, and Dave Graybill~ the Fishin’ Magician.
