Staff from Mingo National Wildlife Refuge participated in the annual Ag Expo Event in nearby Poplar Bluff, Mo. The event was held in the Black River Coliseum and went from Friday, Jan. 18 to Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013. The 2013 Ag Expo was sponsored by the Butler County University of Missouri Extension Council and Three Rivers College Agriculture Club. In total, more than 118 Agricultural and Natural Resource related exhibits were setup within the coliseum. Both days were filled with many fun family activities with one of those being a duck calling contest.

During the two-day event, Mingo Refuge staff worked a booth providing visitors with information about the refuge and upcoming events. One of the popular topics was regarding the upcoming Eagle Days Event at the refuge. Refuge staff also brought animal furs, a replica red-eared slider turtle, a blue-winged teal mount and a hooded merganser mount for visitors to look at, feel and learn about. Refuge related posters, brochures and event flyers were handed out throughout both days. In total, more than 1,300 people visited Mingo’s booth.

Overall, the Ag Expo was a great opportunity for refuge staff to share information about the plants, animals and habitats of the refuge. It was also a great way to encourage people to come out and enjoy one of the many outdoor activities on the refuge. Refuge staff felt the event was extremely beneficial and plan to participate next year.
