The Tishomingo National Fish Hatchery held their 15th Annual Kids' Fishing Derby on Saturday, June 6.  The attendance was tremendous, with about three hundred children from ages 6-12 registering, and catching some really impressive stringers of channel catfish from two ponds.  All of the children and their guardians enjoyed the pleasant weather and abundant fish population in our local celebration of National Fishing and Boating Week.

In a continuing effort to promote healthy eating habits, the Chickasaw Nation Nutritional Services graciously provided free healthy snacks for the hungry fishermen and all in attendance - fresh fruit, healthy granola bars, cheeses, fruit juices and water. The community support for this event is amazing including local dignitaries in attendance, with TREES and CPASA donating to the prize pool, along with Tish Lumber, Scotty's Blue River One Stop, Sipokni West, Bass Pro Shop, and individual donors. The local chapter of the National Turkey Federation donated prizes and was present to help at the Derby.  Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, in addition to helping at the Derby, provided publications and posters for the goody bag that each child received as they registered.  Staff from Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge, Tulsa Ecological Services Office, Reagan Volunteer Fire Department, and local citizens volunteered their time and energy to help at the Derby also.

Supervisory staff attending from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Regional Office in Albuquerque commented that of all the fish hatcheries in their region (New Mexico, Arizona, Oklahoma and Texas), this Derby draws the most attendance by far.
