Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge Hosts Annual Christmas Bird Counts
Southwest Region, December 16, 2005
Print Friendly Version
The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge hosted its annual bird counts on Friday, December 16th and Wednesday, December 21st in 2005. 10 avid birders participated in the "Sevilleta" count on Friday. The day was cold, starting off with temperatures below freezing, but slowly warmed up thanks to a lack of wind and goodly portions of sun. 87 species were seen on this count, a fair number considering the small number of participants. The "Five Points" count was held the following Wednesday. This time only 9 participants were able to make it out to the Refgue. Even better weather prevailed on the 21st, with temps into the 50's. Only 53 species were seen on this count which lacks significant water resources.
