The Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) recently completed its annual youth deer hunt, a tradition enjoyed by many hunters dating back to the early 1970s.This years youth hunt took place on Saturday, November 3rd only a few days after Hurricane Sandy ripped through New Jersey. Whether to continue with the hunt after the storms devastation was a difficult decision made by refuge managers. The hunt went forward and its success can be measured in many ways, some plain to see such as a harvested deer, others not so obvious. Several hunters were from southern New Jersey where the storm touched down. The comments from some of these hunters were very telling and validated that the correct decision was made in moving forward with the hunt. Feedback and comments from these hunters made it clear that the hunt and the time spent outdoors was a very welcome relief from the pain and sorrow experienced at the hand of the hurricane.
