Big Oaks Goes Back in Time at Lanier Days Celebration

In mid-June, Mardean Roach and Beth Black participated in the annual Lanier Days celebration in downtown Madison. The event, which is organized by the Lanier Mansion State Historic Site, includes a Civil War era encampment, traditional trades demonstrations and children’s activities.

Roach and Black demonstrated Dutch oven cooking using a campfire. Roach made a venison stew and Black made shepherd’s pie. Free samples were distributed at the end of the demonstration. Roach and Black honed their Dutch oven cooking skills at the annual Outdoor Women at Big Oaks event held earlier in June. At that event, not only did they demonstrate and cook up the venison stew and the shepherd’s pie, but there was also a tamale pie, blueberry pancakes, scrambled eggs and peach cobbler. Some of the participants in the Dutch oven cooking class proclaimed it “the best class of the day!”
