Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge kicked off National Wildlife Refuge Week with a community festival at the refuge on Saturday, Oct. 13. The 16th annual Log Cabin Day Festival, sponsored by the refuge Friends Group, the Muscatatuck Wildlife Society, was held at historic Myers Cabin. The festival featured a free ham and bean dinner, old-time crafts demonstrated by a student after-school group (the Refuge Rangers), music, blacksmiths, wildlife exhibits, children's bird crafts, and interpretation of a nearby eagles nest. The weather cooperated, the fall colors were near their peak, and approximately 300 people attended the festival. Myers Cabin, one of the original log homes built in the area, is under review for placement on the National Register of Historic Places and has been maintained by the Muscatatuck Wildlife Society for many years.
