After years of a concerted effort to address the backlog of Candidate Species, there are now only 30 species on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's list of candidates. The 2016 Candidate Notice of Review is the yearly status appraisal of plants and animals that are candidates for Endangered Species Act (ESA) protection, and it was published on December 2, 2016. As part of this year's review, one species – the Fremont County rockcress – changed in priority.
