LAFAYETTE, La. – The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is scheduled to hold family-oriented wildlife activities for Endangered Species Day 2024 with the Lafayette Science Museum on May 18.

"We are pleased to partner with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for Endangered Species Day. As part of our mission to inspire interest in STEM careers and research opportunities, this engaging educational event provides visitors of all ages a window into the world of wildlife biologists working to conserve and protect wildlife, habitats, biodiversity and native species," said Dr. Jennifer Hargrave, museum director.

The Endangered Species Day activities will be at the Lafayette Science Museum at 433 Jefferson St. They will begin at 1 p.m. and end at 4 p.m.

“We think it is very important on days like Endangered Species Day to reach out to the community about how important it is to protect biodiversity,” said Brigette Firmin, Louisiana Ecological Services Field Supervisor. “Especially to reach our young people and spark their imaginations because they are the future caretakers of the environment.”

The planned activities include:

  • Endangered Species Act Jeopardy: families can test their knowledge of the Endangered Species Act which protects fish, wildlife and plants at risk of endangerment or extinction
  • Louisiana pinesnake activity: children can become the Louisiana pinesnake and the Baird’s pocket gopher to learn how the threatened snake hunts in burrows
  • Habitat toss: participants can choose the correct habitat for animals by tossing a stuffed animal to its matching habitat

The mission of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is working with others to conserve, protect, and enhance fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people.
