Cartersville Dam is located at the town of Forsyth, Montana. The dam was constructed during the early 1930's utilizing a rock- rubble riprap capped with concrete. The dam is over 800 feet in length and spans the entire channel of the Yellowstone River. Because this dam expands the entire river bed, it is viewed as a fish and boater passage barrier. The greatest impediment of this dam likely occurs during periods of lower flows (Bureau of Reclamation and Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks 1999).
This office in conjunction with Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks, and US Army Corps of Engineers is currently working on a proposal to develop a fish bypass. Once a proposal is developed the US Fish and Wildlife Service's Yellowstone River Coordinator will begin working cooperatively with the Cartersville Irrigation District to find suitable alternatives and bypass designs to promote fish passage.
