  • Location: Wolf Island NWR is a barrier island located off the Georgia coast, 12 miles east of Darien, Georgia in McIntosh County.
  • Established as a migratory bird sanctuary and was designated a National Wilderness Area in 1975.
  • Notable concentrations of waterfowl, wading/marsh birds and shorebirds can be found.
  • Brown pelicans, loggerhead sea turtles, and diamondback terrapins are significant species which utilize the refuge. Loggerhead sea turtles occasionally nest on the beaches, but rarely are successful due to tidal inundation or predation, while diamondback terrapins use the higher dunes for nesting.

  • Wolf Island NWR is part of a seven-refuge complex that has an annual budget of $3,434,000
    (FY 06) and a combined staff of 29, none assigned specifically to this refuge.
  • Public use figures are not compiled as only navigable waters are open to public use.
