News and ReportsWinthrop National Fish Hatchery Update 2010:Follow Sammie Salmon from Winthrop National Fish HatcheryHatchery Genetic Management Plan:The Hatchery Genetic Management Plans (HGMP) for both the spring chinook and steelhead programs at Winthrop National Fish Hatchery expired in 2009 and the hatchery is currently working on updating these documents with the latest changes which are expected to take place over the next five years. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries depends on these documents to produce necessary Endangered Species Act (ESA) permits which allow the facility to carry out its fish programs. Juvenile Steelhead Study:Winthrop National Fish Hatchery was recently involved in a study to compare two different release strategies for juvenile steelhead. The study found that there was little difference in survival of volitional-releases versus forced-released steelhead. This study was published in the North American Journal of Aquaculture in 2009 (Gale, W. L. etal. 2009. Juvenile Steelhead Release Strategies: A Comparison of Volitional- and Forced-Release Practices. North American Journal of Aquaculture 71:97-106). |
