Volunteering at Willapa NWR

Volunteers are vital to keep Willapa National Wildlife Refuge operating. In 2004, volunteers contributed nearly 1000 hours. Volunteers help with a variety of programs including environmental education, habitat restoration for the threatened snowy plover, trail construction, salmon spawning stream restoration, and trail maintenance.
One of the many program we couldn't operate without volunteers is the 4th Grade Environmental Education Program. Volunteers from the Friends of Willapa National Wildlife Refuge and refuge staff visit area 4th grade classrooms four times throughout the school year. In spring, the classes come out to the refuge for an all day field trip. Students learn about birds, amphibians, habitats, invasive species, and the importance of national wildlife refuges to migratory birds and other wildlife.
