From staff-led birding and wildflower hikes to pond studies for local elementary students, Waubay NWR tries to raise awareness about the natural world all around us. Boy and Girl Scouts, Bible camps, and numerous other clubs and organizations use our equipment and facilities to teach and inform their students and peers.

Need a new learning tool or just a break from textbooks?

Waubay National Wildlife Refuge has three educational trunks that are available for loan to educators or home schoolers interested in teaching about migratory birds or wetlands. These trunks are free to use and will be picked up and delivered at your convenience.

WONDERFUL TRAVELING WETLAND TRUNK

This trunk is all about wetlands and their importance to people and wildlife. It is designed for use in the classroom. There are videos, books, puzzles, puppets, furs and games. All activities are described in the Educator's Guide along with additional resources. Most activities are geared towards 4th through 8th graders but many can be adapted for younger or older students.

MIGRATORY BIRD BACKPACKS

This trunk has backpacks that are filled with binoculars, field guides and activity sheets. Leader packs have pre- and post-visit plus on-site activity guides, a tape recorder and binoculars. This trunk was designed for use on the Refuge but activities could be adapted for the schoolyard or other outdoor location. This trunk was designed for use with 4th through 6th graders.


 

SHOREBIRD TRUNK -

This trunk is for use in the classroom and includes books, videos, field guides, puppets and a K-12 curriculum guide for teaching about shorebirds and other migratory birds.

PRAIRIE TRUNK

This trunk is also available for use in the classroom and supports educators who wish to teach about grasslands and prairie ecosystems. This trunk includes books, a K-12 curriculum, a neat bison costume and other activities about prairie wildlife. THIS TRUNK IS AVAILABLE FROM SAND LAKE NWR - Please call 605-885-6320 to reserve
