Environmental Assessment

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has completed an environmental assessment (EA) and Finding of No Significant Impact for a new administrative facility for the Washington Maritime National Wildlife Refuge Complex. The buildings will be located on the Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge (Refuge).

The Facility

The facility replacement is necessitated by the Washington State Department of Transportation’s project to widen Highway 101 from Kitchen-Dick Road to Shore Road scheduled to begin in 2009. The current office and maintenance shop is in the project’s right-of-way and will be demolished to construct the wider highway.
An EA was prepared to evaluate a proposal to construct a new administrative facility comprising an office, shop and equipment storage building at the end of Holgerson Road on Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge (NWR).  The public was informed of the availability of the Draft EA through a news release in the local newspaper. In addition all property owners who access their property via Holgerson Road were sent a copy of the news release submitted to the newspapers. This EA was made available for public review and comment from May 22, 2007, through June 27, 2007.  In addition there were two public informational meetings held on June 6, 2007 at the Sequim Prairie Grange, 209 Macleay Road, Sequim, Washington. Twenty-nine comments were received. The proposal has been coordinated with Clallam County Parks who manage the adjacent Dungeness Recreation Area.
