Management
As
on all of our Refuges, one of our most important management functions
is protecting the wildlife by providing undisturbed habitat. We
do this by placing Refuge boundary signs, instituting spatial and seasonal
closures, having a year-round Refuge staff and volunteer presence,
and by providing outreach and education.
Working with our own staff, volunteers and partners, we support surveys
and research on Caspian terns, glaucous-winged gulls, black oystercatchers,
waterfowl, forage fish species, and butterfly species of concern. We
participate in the COASST program (Coastal Observation and Seabird
Survey Team - http://www.coasst.org/), backyard bird counts, Christmas
bird counts, and birding festivals. We remove trash and other
debris as well as invasive plants whenever we find them. In
particular, we have had a successful program of reducing Dalmatian
toadflax on Graveyard spit.
