Western Washington Hatchery Reform

The Western Washington Hatchery Reform Project is a Congressionally-funded scientific and systematic redesign of hatchery programs to help recover wild salmon and support sustainable fisheries in Puget Sound and coastal Washington. A 3-year review of hatcheries in this area was completed in 2003 by an interagency panel of scientists (the Hatchery Scientific Review Group). The project is now in the program implementation and monitoring phase.

Currently, our staff participate in the hatchery reform process for the Service’s three National Fish Hatcheries (NFHs) on the Olympic Peninsula: Quilcene, Quinault, and Makah. In 2006, we monitored recovery of natural Quilcene River summer chum salmon, as a follow-up to Quilcene NFH’s summer chum salmon recovery program. We also collected northern Hood Canal coho salmon for DNA analysis to determine the best coho salmon broodstock for Quilcene NFH. In 2007, we will follow-up the DNA analysis by working closely with Service partners to determine an appropriate broodstock for Quilcene. Additional hatchery reform on the Olympic Peninsula will involve both Quinault and Makah NFH programs.  (Contact: Dave Zajac)

Comprehensive Hatchery Management Plans

We are working with the Service’s Olympic Peninsula hatcheries and Olympia Fish Health Center to complete Comprehensive Hatchery Management Plans (CHMPs) for Quinault and Makah NFHs. The CHMPs, when completed, will provide a comprehensive source of information on the background, purpose, mandates, and production at these hatcheries. In February 2007, the Quilcene CHMP was approved by the Service’s Regional Office, and a copy of the CHMP is posted in this website’s Publication section.  (Contact: Dave Zajac or Yvonne Dettlaff)
