BACKGROUND

We are a team of fish and wildlife biologists with expertise in forest, aquatic and marine ecology; endangered species biology, and the effects of human activities on fish, wildlife and plants. We work with federal agencies under Section 7 of the Endangered Species Act to ensure that proposed projects that they authorize, fund, or carry out do not jeopardize the continued existence of Federally-listed species or destroy or adversely modify designated critical habitat. We also ensure that potential adverse effects to listed species and their habitats are minimized as much as possible.

We work with the Corps of Engineers and Bureau of Reclamation on water resource development activities to minimize effects to fish and wildlife. In the Washington Fish and Wildlife Office, the Federal Activities Branch works with agencies such as the Corps of Engineers, Federal Emergency Management Agency, and Department of Defense; the Forest Resources Branch works with agencies such as the Forest Service, National Park Service, and Bureau of Indian Affairs; and the Transportation Branch works with the Federal Highway Administration and the Corps of Engineers.  Each office covers the Section 7 consultations in their respective geographic area.

For further information on Section 7, the Endangered Species Act, and examples of completed Biological Opinions, please visit the Section 7 Consultation page. If you wish to contact someone working in the Consultation and Technical Assistance Division, please see our staff directory below.
