Refuge System Centennial Poster Contest

Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge hosted a poster and writing contest for grades K-12 to celebrate this years Centennnial of the National Wildlife Refuge System. The first National Wildlife Refuge, Pelican Island, was established on March 14,1903 by President Theodore Roosevelt. There are now over 530 National Wildlife Refuges. One hundred sixty five posters were received from 2nd, 4th, and 5th grade classes in Spokane County as part of the Centennial celebration. All poster entries had to contain the slogan "Celebrating a Century of Conservation." Copies of winning entries are buried in Turnbull's Time Capsule which will be opened in 2103.

4th grade - Kathleen Breach - 3rd place - Farwell Elementary

5th grade - Anna Kriger - 1st place - Valley Christian

5th grade - Jessica Talbot - 2nd place - Arcadia Elementary

5th grade - Glenn Cragon - 3rd place - Arcadia Elementary
