Birding Resources

Many elements have combined to make the national wildlife refuges of Rhode Island into some of the premiere birding spots in the state. The following information can help you begin to understand "Which birds are where, and when are they there?"--one of the most common questions we get asked by visitors.

Some of the resources listed on this page were saved as .pdf files. If you need the free .pdf file reader, please click here: http://get.adobe.com/reader/

Birding Backpacks

If you are new to birding, or forgot to bring your birding tools, we have loaner backpacks at each visitor center (Kettle Pond and Sachuest Point) and the contact station at Trustom Pond NWR. Each loaner backpack contains a pair of binoculars and at least a field guide to birds. The volunteers who will be checking these backpacks out to you can give you some instructions and advice, but the best thing to do is to take your backpack and get out there on the refuge to see what you can see. Picture on left is of light red cloth backpack sitting on a table with binoculars and filed guides spread in front. The image on the right is of a young girl looking away from the camera with binoculars in her hands and a birding backpack on her back.

Rhode Island Coastal Adventure Trails - Coastal Birding Trail

This is an excellent guide not only for the birds in the area, but also to the area itself.
"In descriptions of the Coastal Birding Trail refuges, you will learn a little about each place and how to find it. The descriptions highlight the species special to each refuge, but the commonly seen species will likely be seen there as well."

USGS/NPWRC Bird Checklists of the United States - Birds of Rhode Island

This list focuses on the five national wildlife refuges of Rhode Island, which makes it a good place to start your checklist for our refuges. However, it is an older document and needs to be updated, so make sure you supplement this information with other birding lists. http://www.npwrc.usgs.gov/resource/birds/chekbird/r5/ninigret.htm
