Welcome...
...to Theodore Roosevelt National Wildlife Refuge – one of two
new national wildlife refuges in the Theodore Roosevelt National Wildlife
Refuge Complex. In January, 2004, legislation sponsored by Senator
Thad Cochran and Congressman Bennie Thompson established the Theodore
Roosevelt
National Wildlife Refuge. The legislation also:
• Changed the name of Central Mississippi Refuge Complex to
Theodore Roosevelt National Wildlife Refuge Complex
•
Included provisions to design and construct the Holt Collier Environmental
Education and Interpretation Center at a location in the south Delta
region
•
Established a new Holt Collier National Wildlife Refuge
The refuge is currently in the form of scattered Farmers Home Administration
lands totaling 6,600 acres. No additional land was purchased to establish
the Theodore Roosevelt National Wildlife Refuge. These FmHA lands were
previously in the inventory of the U.S. Department of Agriculture,
and had been transferred to the Fish & Wildlife Service’s
Refuge System for management. Plans are underway to exchange these
FmHA lands (which are scattered throughout 7 counties) with one contiguous
tract of land near Onward, Mississippi.
