Working with Private Landowners in Calhoun County

Project Description:  This project will reclaim and/or enhance 5,495 acres of coastal prairie and 105 acres of freshwater wetlands in Calhoun County, Texas.  The project will restore/enhance important coastal habitat and potential habitat for whooping cranes, migratory grassland birds, Attwater’s Prairie chicken, and northern alpomado falcon on private lands.  The project will restore coastal prairie that has been invaded by McCartney Rose, Chinese tallow, huisache, and mesquite.  The project will be accomplished by burning the entire unit to prescription at least twice during the 10-year term of the agreement and performing brush management over at least 1,500 acres.  The pastures will be included in a grazing system, which will facilitate accumulation of fine fuels for burning, provide nesting and brood-rearing habitat for grassland birds, and help maintain the dominance of desirable native grasses and forbs.
