SCENIC GALVESTON's Virginia Point Project: Acquisition, Restoration & Management
![]()
SCENIC GALVESTON has been awarded $2
million from the Coastal Impact Assistance Program for the purchase of 1,498
acres of coastal prairie, known as the Virginia Point tract. In addition to the
many cultural and historical resources, this site possesses a diverse array of
biological resources, from wildlife habitat to coastal prairie and fresh marsh
vegetation species. A Fish and Wildlife Service biologist noted 55 species of
vascular plants representing 22 families and 40 genera. The project area has had
little active management on the project site other than grazing. As a result,
some areas of the site have been colonized by invasive plant species, primarily
Chinese tallow (Sapium sebiferum) and Eastern baccharis (Baccharis
halimifolia).
Texas Coastal Program funds that will assist Scenic Galveston in the control of invasive species on a 20-25 acre area of the Virginia Point tract. In addition to the removal and control of invasive species, the Coastal Program will assist SCENIC GALVESTON with the development of a management plan for the control of invasive species and the preservation and restoration of wildlife and plant diversity at the Virginia Point tract.
