Teacher School Yard Workshop Education

Texas Coastal Program funds assisted in the development and implementation of
a guide/program entitled "Linking Texas Essential
Knowledge and Skills to
your School Habitat." The guide focuses on the Texas Essential Knowledge
and Skills for grades Kindergarten through fifth. Texas Coastal Program funds
will be used to instruct half-day in-service teacher training workshops,
curriculum and activity workshops, materials to implement school habitat
studies, and workshops in conjunction with USFWS and TPWD programs which focus on
how to develop, fund, and use school habitats.
In this country, generations of children are being raised with limited
exposure to the outdoors and are
not afforded the opportunity to learn about the
natural environment. In metropolitan areas such as the greater Houston area,
many children do not have access to the natural world. For those young people
who do live in suburban and rural areas, the opportunity may exist to visit the
natural world, but they often do not have anyone to teach or share experiences
with them regarding these natural surroundings. This program teaches and
encourages the youth to become involved and educated in our natural resources
through workshops, training, and hands-on activities.
