Saluria Bayou Shoreline Protection

Texas Coastal Program funds will support the completion of the Alternative Analysis to evaluate alternatives for addressing erosion problems on the west shoreline of Matagorda Bay, just south of Saluria Bayou and west of Cavallo Pass in Calhoun County, Texas. The west shore of Matagorda Bay is experiencing significant scouring by wind driven waves and has lost approximately 500ft (57 acres) since 1952. This study will assess the feasibility, cost, and financing or different methods of avoiding, slowing, or remedying coastal erosion. The information will be used when implementing the restoration project, which could include: creating an offshore breakwater to reduce the wave energy impacting the shoreline and promote shoreline stabilization. The purpose of this project is to cooperatively evaluate alternatives for addressing erosion problem(s) identified, to assess the feasibility, cost, and financing of different methods of avoiding, slowing, or remedying coastal ersosion. Additionally, this project will create intertidal marsh which is known to support juvenile finfish and shellfish and protect the landward habitats and brackish marsh from additional saltwater intrusion and habitat conversion.
