Moses Lake Shoreline Protection Project
![]()
The southern and eastern shorelines of the Texas City Prairie Preserve which
are on Moses Lake/ Galveston Bay are badly eroding at a rate of at least 2-3
feet per year. Of special interest, is a cove which
consists of approximately 50
acres of intertidal marsh and shallow water habitat that is highly utilized by
migratory and resident shorebirds and wading birds. The marshes within the cove
also provide an important nursery area for many fish, shrimp, crabs, and other
marine organisms. The sensitive areas of the cove are currently protected by the
remnants of a natural berm. It is anticipated that within the next year this
natural barrier will breach and expose the rich organic soils and delicate
marshes in the cove to erosive wave energy.
